In the next century, the rather malevolent sketch by the French astronomer Jean-Baptiste Biot, who stressed Newton’s madness, was answered by an official portrait of heroic dimensions, the Memoirs of the Life, Writings, and Discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton (1855), by the Scottish scientist Sir David Brew¬ ster. Charles Hutton still had access to the oral tradition for the article on Newton in the Mathematical and Philosophical Dictionary. The best eighteenth-century account was probably the one incorpo¬ rated in the Biographia Britannica (1760), whose author had in¬ spected papers in the possession of the Earl of Macclesfield and had garnered bits of evidence from conversation with men who had known the living Newton.
